Baptism

Go, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit... (Matthew 28:19)

“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: ‘Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.’” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1213)

Many Catholics receive the sacrament of baptism as infants, in the presence of his or her parents and godparents. Through the saving waters of baptism, Catholics believe that we are washed clean from the stain of original sin (caused by the sin of Adam and Eve). The grace we receive in baptism also makes us children of God the Father and welcomes us into the Catholic Church.

Baptisms at St. Mary’s: For a child to be baptized at St. Mary’s, the parents must be active, participating members of a Catholic Church. This means that the parents must have regular attendance at Mass and be supporting the life of the parish through their time and resources for at least 3 months prior to scheduling the baptism. If they are a member of another parish, the family will need a letter of permission from their pastor for their child to be baptized at St. Mary’s.

The godparent(s) chosen by the family must provide a letter of suitability from their pastor for the role of godparent.

Baptismal preparation (Jordan Conference) for English-speaking families will be offered quarterly through St. Mary church. Preparation for Spanish-speaking families will be arranged individually.

To schedule a baptism please contact the parish office at 614-445-9668

JORDAN CONFERENCE:  This class is for parents who seek to have their child baptized and includes information about sacraments and other particulars for a baptism. This class is offered quarterly via Zoom. Please contact the parish office to find out when the next class is scheduled.

Though baptism is generally administered to infants of Catholic parents, we also baptize adults. This is done through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA). [Formally known as RCIA]
